October Newsletter

WNCOS is excited to welcome another excellent orchid speaker to our Sunday, October 8th meeting.  Sarah Hurdel is the owner of Needmore Orchids, as well as an orchid blogger, exhibitor, and accredited American Orchid Society (AOS) judge. On October 8th, Sarah will tell us all about her specialty—Habenaria species and hybrids.

Showy and colorful, Habenaria is a unique, very attractive genus of orchids. Sarah will be bringing some of her beauties for sale and will fill us in on all her secrets to growing and blooming this unusual plant. This will be our first Habenaria program for WNCOS, and sure to be a lot of fun. Sarah welcomes pre-orders from her website, https://needmore-orchids.myshopify.com/ . Use WNCOS in the code box for your 10% discount and choose ‘local pickup’ option for shipping. Pre-orders accepted until October 4th.

Each year, the WNCOS installs exhibits in our sister society’s regional orchid shows. In turn, they exhibit in our annual Asheville Orchid Festival. A couple of weeks ago, WNCOS Secretary Nancy Graham installed her very first WNCOS exhibit at the Triangle Orchid Show in Raleigh—and won a blue ribbon for the display! When you see Nancy, ask her how much fun she had. If you are interested in learning more about installing orchid exhibits, please let me know. The WNCOS is represented in 4-5 regional shows each year. A special thanks to Gary Green and Jamie Harker for driving to Raleigh to uninstall Nancy’s blue ribbon exhibit.

On Sunday, October 8th at 2:00pm Asheville Visitor Center, 36 Montford Avenue, come learn about Habenaria with Sarah Hurdel. Arrive early to socialize, and to buy orchids of course! And don’t forget to bring your Show-and-Tell orchids.

Not a member yet? That’s okay, everyone is invited.
