October Newsletter

This Sunday, it’s the return of the Orchid Swap Shop! Details below…

I would like to thank our Vice President, Graham Ramsey for all his hard work on behalf of the WNCOS. I hear Graham’s program last month was a huge, and I’m sorry I missed it. He has continued to do an excellent job helping to provide us all with great content, speakers, and orchid opportunities. Additionally, Graham made the long road trip to Raleigh to install an exhibit in the Triangle Orchid Society’s Fall for Orchids orchid show. I hear the WNCOS was represented nicely. A huge thanks to Bill Bauman for making the same trip to do our exhibit take out and haul the plants and ribbons home.

Ok, this Sunday, October 9th at 2:00, the Orchid Swap Shop returns to our regular meeting location at the Asheville Visitor’s Center!  I’m hoping my flight from the Redland International Orchid Festival gets me home in time Sunday afternoon to attend. All you need to know is come for a good time, a wonderful time to talk with all our incredible members and friends and bring your extra divisions or just anything orchid to swap with others. Buy, sell, trade, gift…. No real rules. We do ask that you leave all bugs and pests at home and bring clean plants. Don’t have anything extra to part with currently? No worries, come as you are and find something new to take home from one of our members. If you’re looking to be a buyer and we have some folks selling, please bring your cash. In the past, we’ve had folks bring books, orchid jewelry, orchid art, pots and supplies, etc. to the Orchid Swap Shop. We’ll do show and tell too, so please bring in anything pretty that is in bloom and tell us how you’re growing it.

The November meeting will be our Annual Meeting which means elections. Every two years, the nominating committee recommends a slate of officers and board members for the next two-year term. In November the membership body will vote to accept these nominees. They are as follows:

President   Graham Ramsey

Vice President  Bob Hydzik

Treasurer  Axel Graumann

Secretary  Open

Board Members  Mike Mims, Paul Johnson, Nancy Graham, Gary Green

Please plan to come in November to usher in the new Board for the 2023-24 term.

As always, any active member is always welcome to sit in on any board meetings, a great way to become more aware and involved of the behind the scenes work that’s ongoing for the greater good of the WNCOS. Lots of ways for more involvement, so please let either me or any other of the board members know of your interest.  There are all kinds of ways to help make our club better. And with the Asheville Orchid Festival coming in the Spring, as Show Chair, I will need all the help from you as I can get. It has always been the team effort that has made our show so successful.

Last, thank you for all your support during my past three terms as President. It’s been a fun ride!

Happy growing!

Mike Mims
